Our Story
Aerial Yoga South Africa began as a shared curiosity — a collaboration between two South African instructors who travelled to New York in 2010 to study the art of aerial yoga.
What started as a partnership exploring how yoga could evolve into movement in the air eventually grew into something more defined and personal. Over time, the practice evolved into what is now the Aerial Yoga Foundations Method — developed and facilitated by Julie Fowler, who today owns and presents the training.
While aerial yoga now takes many forms, Aerial Yoga South Africa continues to celebrate the essentials — safety, connection, and the sheer joy of movement. The Foundations Method blends mindful teaching with a sense of play, encouraging every practitioner to move with awareness and light-heartedness. It’s a reminder that learning can be thoughtful and joyful — a practice where strength and softness, discipline and laughter, can all coexist in the air.
About Julie Fowler

Julie Fowler is a South African movement educator with over 15 years of teaching experience across yoga, aerial yoga, and pole disciplines. Her movement journey began in 2007 with pole fitness, sparking a love of body awareness, strength, and creative expression. In 2010, she travelled abroad to study aerial yoga — a turning point that led to years of exploration and teaching.
Julie’s work centres on embodiment, curiosity, and safe exploration — helping students and educators reconnect with their bodies through movement. She teaches in person through the Aerial Yoga Foundations Teacher Training and online via Aerial Yoga Online, making her work accessible to teachers and practitioners worldwide.
The Aerial Yoga Foundations Method
The Foundations Method combines yoga-based alignment, an understanding of how the body moves, and the supportive freedom of the aerial hammock. It encourages practitioners to move with curiosity rather than competition — developing strength, mobility, and confidence through awareness and play.
Rather than focusing on acrobatics or performance, this approach stays close to yoga’s essence: listening to the body, finding balance, and honouring each person’s pace of growth.
